As part of activities marking the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction, officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) have called on government to integrate disaster management and entrepreneurship into Ghana’s basic education curriculum.

Speaking at a commemorative event held in Awutu Bereku, Cassious Otoo Larbi, former NADMO Director for Awutu Senya West and current Regional NADMO Director for the Central Region, emphasized the importance of early education in disaster preparedness.

He noted that countries around the world have successfully incorporated disaster management into school syllabi, helping students build resilience and practical skills from a young age.

“Students should be taught disaster management from the basic level so they can grow with it,” Mr. Larbi noted

NADMO Director for Awutu Senya West, Salifu Adams Rayback, revealed that the district had not celebrated the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction in the past eight years, but expressed optimism that future observance would be held regularly to promote awareness and community engagement.

Also present was Cephas Kofi Agboada, District Director of the NCCE, who addressed Junior High School students.

He urged them to remain focused on their education and avoid inappropriate relationships with teachers, stressing the importance of discipline and academic commitment.

The event brought together students, educators, and community leaders to discuss the role of education in disaster risk reduction and youth development.
