The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been unanimously elected as Chairperson of the Africa Geopolitical Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a body comprising 52 member countries.

The election took place on October 19, 2025, during the ongoing 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, marking a major diplomatic achievement for Ghana and elevating the country’s role in global parliamentary affairs.

In a statement released and signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director, Media Relations, Speaker Bagbin’s new position places him at the forefront of coordinating and harmonizing Africa’s common positions on major IPU decisions and policies.

As Chairperson, he will also serve as the primary representative for African parliamentary interests, championing the continent’s priorities on governance, peace, security, and sustainable development.

The appointment reaffirms Speaker Bagbin’s growing stature as a global parliamentary leader with significant influence in international relations.

He currently serves as President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) and is the immediate past Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International.

In his acceptance remarks, Speaker Bagbin pledged his commitment to fostering deeper unity and collaboration among African parliaments. He expressed gratitude to African delegates who attended the 150th IPU Conference, and he particularly acknowledged the Nigerian delegation for nominating him, as well as the Senegalese delegation for withdrawing their candidate in the spirit of African unity and consensus.

Outlining his vision, Speaker Bagbin emphasized transparency, democratic governance, and sustainable development through strengthened legislative institutions.

He takes over from Ms. Angela Thokozile Didiza, Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly, who was commended for her exceptional leadership during her tenure.

The Africa Geopolitical Group, established in the 1950s, serves as the IPU’s continental branch, ensuring fair representation in its Executive Committee and other key bodies. The Group also coordinates Africa’s common agenda at IPU assemblies and proposes candidates for leadership positions within the Union.

The election of Rt. Hon. Bagbin further cements Ghana’s reputation as a leader in international parliamentary diplomacy.
