No school is authorised to collect PTA dues – GES cautions

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned all public schools, particularly second-cycle institutions, against demanding or collecting unauthorised levies under the guise of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) dues.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the Service said it had received reports that some schools were engaging in the collection of various levies without the necessary approvals.

The statement emphasized that no school has been authorised to collect any PTA or development levy without prior approval.

It explained that such approval must come from the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education for basic schools, and from the Regional Director of Education for second-cycle schools.

GES also reminded school authorities that even when approved, all such payments must remain strictly voluntary, stressing that no student should be denied access to education or any school service for failing to make such payments.

The Service further directed that no headteacher, teacher, or GES staff member should be involved in the collection of PTA levies, stating that fundraising activities are solely the responsibility of duly elected PTA executives.

All Regional and District Directors asked to monitor compliance and report any breaches for immediate disciplinary action.
