The government has announced plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to boost the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve public transport services nationwide.

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, disclosed this in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to revitalise the public transportation sector and advance Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.

According to the minister, the first batch of about 150 buses is expected to arrive in early 2026, marking the beginning of the rollout.

Mr. Nikpe noted that MMTL currently operates only 134 functional buses, a situation that has hindered the company’s ability to expand routes and meet the rising demand for affordable and reliable transport.

Responding to questions from Members of Parliament, he said the new buses are part of a comprehensive plan to modernise terminal infrastructure, enhance service quality, and create more employment opportunities in the transport sector.

“Mr Speaker, I wish to inform this House that the company is in the process of acquiring about 500 new buses over a short to long term to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe stated.

He added that the new buses would be deployed nationwide to optimise existing routes and open new ones in underserved communities.

The minister further revealed that Metro Mass Transit is working to operationalise aspects of a 24-hour economy, beginning with its vehicle maintenance and traffic management units, to ensure continuous bus availability and service reliability.
