Asutifi North MP to Appear Before CID Over NAIMOS Attack

The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has confirmed his readiness to cooperate with police investigations into the recent attack on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.

Mr. Addo stated that he will appear at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in response to a police invitation.

His decision follows a statement from the Ghana Police Service on Monday, November 3, indicating that the legislator had been invited to assist with ongoing inquiries into the violent disturbance.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the CID to take over the investigation. The directive stems from an incident on Saturday, November 1, when the NAIMOS Director and his team were attacked by a mob after intercepting illegal miners near Bronikrom.

In a letter issued through his legal representatives, the MP reaffirmed his “unwavering commitment to the rule of law, public order, and the peace and security of his constituents and the nation at large.”

He also “categorically denies any act or omission amounting to misconduct or obstruction of police duties,” emphasizing that his actions at the scene were solely intended to “calm tensions and prevent a possible breakdown of public order.”

The MP’s lawyers further requested that “all subsequent communications regarding this matter be directed to our office.”

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the NAIMOS team arrested several suspects and retrieved exhibits, including a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, two pistol magazines, an unregistered Range Rover, an unregistered Toyota RAV4, and multiple mobile phones.

The police earlier alleged that while the NAIMOS team was preparing to hand over the suspects to the Hwidiem Police Station, the Asutifi North MP arrived at the scene with a group and demanded their release a claim the legislator has strongly denied.

The Ghana Police Service has assured that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that due process is followed.
