President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive requiring all schools nationwide to procure only Ghana-produced rice, maize, chicken, and eggs for their feeding programmes.

The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy in Parliament on Thursday.

According to the Finance Minister, the directive forms part of government’s strategy to strengthen the local agricultural value chain, support farmers, and reduce dependence on imported food commodities.

Dr. Ato Forson also disclosed that President Mahama has approved the release of an additional GH¢200 million to address the ongoing food glut affecting farmers across the country, particularly maize producers.

The funds will enable the National Food Buffer Stock Company to immediately mop up excess produce from the market to stabilise prices, prevent post-harvest losses, and safeguard farmer incomes.

“This intervention is to ensure that no Ghanaian farmer suffers losses because they produced in abundance,” the Finance Minister stated.

He added that the new procurement directive for schools will create a guaranteed market for local farmers, stimulate agro-processing, support rural economies, and enhance national food security.
