Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called for strict adherence to parliamentary procedures and clear timelines from the Defence and Interior Committee as it investigates the tragic incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, where six young Ghanaians lost their lives during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, November 14, Annoh-Dompreh described the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy that requires urgent attention. He urged the Committee to provide a clear schedule for its work, suggesting that a report could be ready within a fortnight to three weeks.
“I understand the concern of the Honourable Member,” he stated. “Given the urgency of this matter, and with the Speaker having already directed the Standing Committee on Defence and Interior to investigate, perhaps a fortnight or three weeks is a reasonable timeframe for them to submit their findings to Plenary.”
He stressed that once a matter is referred to a parliamentary committee, members must refrain from pre-empting its outcome or engaging in discussions that could influence the process.
Annoh-Dompreh highlighted the importance of empowering the Committee to engage all relevant stakeholders, gather evidence, and present a comprehensive report to guide Parliament’s next steps.
He added that upon the Committee’s submission, the House will be better positioned to debate the findings, propose remedies, and take further action in the national interest.
The Minority Chief Whip reaffirmed that upholding parliamentary procedures is vital to ensuring transparency, accountability, and justice for the victims and their families.
