Madam Harriet Amuzu, the 32-year-old woman seen in a viral video being brutally assaulted by her husband, has spoken publicly about the long-standing abuse she has endured and the events that led to the shocking footage that has sparked national outrage.

In an interview sighted by Happyghana.com, Harriet revealed that she shares two children with her husband, John Odartey Lamptey, alias Nii Adjei, but had been living with her family at Okyereso Camp in Akim Oda due to repeated beatings.

She explained that she left their matrimonial home months ago because the marriage had become unsafe and unbearable.

According to her, on Saturday, November 15, she received a call from her husband claiming their younger child, Lawrence, was critically ill and needed his mother’s care.

Trusting the information, she agreed to return to Accra on Sunday. However, upon arrival, she realized none of the children was sick, leading her to believe her husband fabricated the story to lure her back.

Harriet said tensions escalated that same day when her husband attempted to force sex on her. She resisted, explaining that they had not been intimate for five months.

Her refusal, she said, triggered a violent reaction, with her husband insulting her and threatening to kill her.

She narrated that on Monday, November 24, her husband hurriedly prepared the children for school, a behaviour she described as unusual.

Immediately after the children left, he allegedly stripped her naked and began assaulting her with sticks and a broom, repeatedly threatening to end her life. At one point, he reportedly attempted to pick up a cutlass, but his brother, Louis Odartey Lamptey, intervened and prevented him from using it.

Harriet said she endured severe beatings until she managed to escape when her husband stepped into the kitchen. A tenant who witnessed the incident recorded part of the attack, the video that later went viral.

She further alleged that this was not the first time she had faced such attacks.

According to her, several complaints were made to the Ofankor Police Station and the Tesano Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), but no action was taken.

She appealed to Ghanaians for support her, stating that the abusive marriage has taken a heavy toll on her life.

Meanwhile, in a police update, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Magistrate Court has remanded John Odartey Lamptey and two others who attempted to attack the tenant suspected of recording and circulating the viral video.

John has been charged with Physical Assault under the Domestic Violence Act, while the two others, Louis Odartey Lamptey and Grace Kushie Lamptey have been charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Crime: threat of harm.

They are expected to reappear in court on 3rd December 2025.

The Ghana Police Service has also appealed to the public for information on the whereabouts of Madam Harriet Amuzu, assuring that any information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality.
