GAF Recruitment Resumes Today with New Safety Rules After El-Wak Tragedy

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun its suspended recruitment exercise in Accra today under strict new safety measures, following last week’s deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium that claimed six lives and injured many others.

Recruitment was suspended on the orders of President John Dramani Mahama to allow for a full review of safety protocols and restructure the screening process to prevent a repeat of the incident.

In a statement announcing the resumption, GAF outlined stricter safety protocols, including the creation of five separate screening centres to reduce congestion and better regulate the flow of applicants.

Director-General of Public Affairs of GAF, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, disclosed that the number of candidates screened daily will now be strictly controlled.

“The numbers that will be at El-Wak will not be more than 1,200. This is because we are going to have two groups there, each made up of 600 potential recruits,” she stated.

Captain Arhin added that the exercise will run for at least five days and will be conducted in phases, beginning with document verification and physical assessments.

“The screening is in phases, and this is phase one, where we verify their information and do the body checks,” she explained.

GAF says the revised procedure is designed to prevent overcrowding, prioritise security, and protect the lives of applicants throughout the recruitment process.
