FDA cautions public to beware of expired and unsafe foods this Christmas

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Daniel Yao Geraldo, has cautioned the public to be extra vigilant about the foods and products they buy, especially as the Christmas season approaches.

Speaking on behalf of the FDA, he advised consumers to carefully check the expiry dates, the authenticity of products, their country of origin, and whether they bear the FDA registration markings or stamps, which show that the products are safe for use.

Mr. Geraldo further noted that canned foods should be inspected thoroughly to ensure that the cans are not rusted, dented, or bloated, and that the packaging is properly sealed and intact, as poor packaging may indicate contamination.

He made these remarks when the FDA engaged corn and rice mill operators, explaining that machinery containing heavy metals can gradually contaminate food products and pose serious health risks.

He also outlined the health implications of ignoring FDA guidelines, warning that consuming unsafe or expired products can damage the body’s systems and lead to serious illness.

Mr. Geraldo therefore urged the public especially those who operate corn and rice mills to be vigilant, comply with FDA regulations, and work closely with the Authority to protect public health.
