Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has rejected claims that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is deliberately avoiding accountability to the nation, insisting that the ex-minister is abroad receiving medical care.
Addressing Parliament on Friday, November 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin said Mr. Ofori-Atta has submitted official medical documentation to justify his absence and stressed that it is “misleading and unfair” to suggest he is hiding from the legislature.
According to him, doctors’ letters and medical reports detailing the former minister’s condition are on record and have been shared with the relevant parliamentary authorities.
“It is not as though he has vanished or is refusing to cooperate,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “He is undergoing medical treatment and has duly notified Parliament. Anyone could fall ill. Let us be measured in our comments and avoid attributing wrongful motives.”
The Minority Leader said public commentary surrounding the issue must be handled with fairness and empathy, emphasizing the constitutional right of every citizen, including political figures to medical privacy and due process.
His comments followed concerns raised by Banda MP Ahmed Ibrahim, who questioned the former minister’s prolonged absence and demanded clarity on his whereabouts.
