Ghana Football Association, President and CAF 2nd Vice-President, Kurt Simeon-Okraku, has introduced a landmark insurance policy to improve the welfare and protection of referees across Ghana’s domestic leagues.

The policy, launched on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, delivers on a promise he made at the 31st Congress in Prampram. Speaking at the event, Simeon-Okraku said the initiative marks “a significant milestone” for Ghana football, stressing how important referees are to the integrity of the game.

All 280 referees in the Premier League, Division One League and Women’s Premier League have been enrolled. The package covers group life insurance, critical illness, permanent disability, medical bills and workmen’s compensation. Referees’ families also benefit through spouse, child and parent cover, plus funeral support.

“This is not just an insurance policy; it is a social protection package,” he said. “It shows that the GFA cares about referees, their families and their future.”

The GFA has also provided new logistics for officials, two pairs of boots each season, three sets of uniforms and three warm-up kits, the first time such a full package has been offered. Referees will continue to enjoy a 50% travel discount through the STC partnership.

Simeon-Okraku also highlighted efforts to improve refereeing standards, including FIFA and CAF approved refresher courses, workshops, fitness tests and video analysis. He praised the growth of female referees and the success of the “Catch Them Young” programme.

He described the insurance launch as the start of a new era where referees can work with confidence, knowing their safety and wellbeing are protected.

The event was attended by Enterprise Life’s Senior Business Manager, Jerry Kwame Hodasi, Referees Committee Chairperson, Christine Enyonam Zigah, Referees Manager, Alexander Kotey, and several male and female FIFA referees.
