Ghana has taken another major step in its ongoing debt restructuring efforts with the signing of a bilateral agreement with the Czech Republic, the seventh such deal concluded under the country’s external debt recovery programme.

The agreement was signed on Thursday, December 11, between Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Mr. René Jakl, Director of the Claims and Recoveries Department at the Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation (EGAP), who represented the Czech government.

Dr. Forson expressed Ghana’s gratitude to the Czech Republic for its cooperation and support throughout the process.

He noted that the long-standing ties between the two countries continue to grow stronger, especially in times when international partnerships are crucial for Ghana’s economic recovery efforts.

“We appreciate the government and people of the Czech Republic for their continuous support. Our relationship has stood the test of time, and today’s agreement further deepens our partnership,” Dr. Forson said.

Mr. Jakl described the signing as the start of “a new chapter” in Ghana–Czech relations.

He indicated that the agreement not only restructures existing obligations but also opens doors for future collaboration and extended support between the two nations.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Pavel Bílek, along with senior officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Finance.

Ghana continues to engage its bilateral creditors as part of efforts to restore debt sustainability, stabilize the economy, and strengthen investor confidence.
