The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) when the rotating position returns to West Africa in 2027.

The endorsement was announced in Abuja, Nigeria, following the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, where a formal recommendation (C/REC.1/12/25) was issued in support of Ghana’s bid.

According to the recommendation document, the Council considered Ghana’s significant contributions to ECOWAS, its international standing, and the need to increase the representation of ECOWAS nationals in regional and global organisations.

The ministers emphasized their determination to work collectively to protect and promote the interests of the sub-region by backing Ghana’s candidacy.

The Council also urged the Authority of Heads of State and Government to adopt the declaration of support during their meeting scheduled for Sunday, December 14.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared the news in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude to colleague ministers and the entire ECOWAS community for the unanimous confidence reposed in President Mahama.

“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he wrote, adding that the country “shall keep making Africa proud.”

The formal adoption by ECOWAS Heads of State is expected to pave the way for President Mahama’s continental leadership bid when West Africa assumes its turn at the helm of the African Union in 2027.
