The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has dismissed media speculation suggesting that it contacted notorious cybercrime suspect Frederick Kumi, popularly known as “Abu Trica,” prior to his arrest.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of the Executive Director of EOCO on December 16, 2025, EOCO clarified that it did not, at any point, reach out to the suspect before his arrest, contrary to reports circulating in sections of the media.

The clarification follows EOCO’s earlier statement issued on December 12, 2025, which announced the collaborative arrest of Frederick Kumi, also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, in connection with an alleged US$8 million romance scam.

According to EOCO, claims that the suspect was contacted by the Office weeks before his arrest are false and should be disregarded.

“The Office did not on any occasion contact ‘Abu Trica’ before the arrest as is being speculated,” the statement emphasized.

EOCO reaffirmed its commitment to combating economic and organised crime and encouraged the public to continue providing information to support law enforcement efforts.
