The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced the immediate reopening of Ussher Fort and James Fort to the general public following a period of temporary closure.

In a statement signed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), the Ministry said the decision to reopen the historic sites was taken after extensive reviews and consultations with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).

According to the Ministry, the engagements have resulted in the implementation of adequate safety measures that will allow controlled public access without compromising visitor safety or the integrity of ongoing restoration works.

The Ministry explained that the earlier directive to close the two forts was issued solely in the interest of public safety.

It expressed appreciation to the general public, tour operators and other stakeholders for their patience, cooperation and understanding during the closure period.

As part of the reopening arrangements, the Ministry, in collaboration with GMMB, has introduced strict access guidelines and monitoring mechanisms to regulate visits to the sites.

Visitors, tour guides and tour operators are required to comply fully with all safety and access measures to ensure that restoration activities are not disrupted.

The Ministry further cautioned that unauthorized access to restricted or unapproved areas of the forts remains strictly prohibited.

Reiterating its commitment to the preservation of Ghana’s cultural heritage, the Ministry emphasized that it will continue to work to ensure that historic sites across the country remain accessible, safe and educational for the benefit of present and future generations.
