An armed attack on the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region on Friday, December 26, has left at least 10 people injured, with two reported to be in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 9:30 am as worshippers were preparing for Friday Juma prayers.
According to eyewitnesses, about five masked men, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed the mosque and opened fire, causing panic and chaos among the congregation. The attackers fled the scene after the shooting, leaving behind a trail of injuries and destruction.
The police have arrested several suspects in connection with the attack, and the military has been deployed to Ho to strengthen security and prevent further escalation.
The Volta Regional Minister, Samuel Dorgu, has visited the injured at the Ho Teaching Hospital, assuring the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear, but sources suggest it may be linked to a long standing leadership dispute at the mosque.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure the situation is brought under control.
