Tema Oil Refinery resumes operations after years of inactivity

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has resumed crude oil refining operations after several years of inactivity, marking a major step in the revival of Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

Management of the refinery in a recent statement noted that the restart follows the successful completion of major maintenance works on its Crude Distillation Unit, carried out between August and October this year, and subsequent regulatory clearance from the National Petroleum Authority.

“Following the completion of the TAM, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) conducted comprehensive regulatory inspections and confirmed TOR’s full compliance with all mandatory safety and operational requirements. Consequently, the NPA granted clearance for the resumption of refining activities”, management shared in their press statement.

The management of TOR confirms that refining officially resumed on December 19, with all petroleum product lines sent to storage for the first time in years, however, operations will continue in phases to stabilise systems and optimise performance ahead of full recommissioning.

TOR also announced the installation of a new furnace expected to restore capacity to 45,000 barrels per day, with plans to expand to 60,000 barrels in the medium term.

Management expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Energy Minister, and refinery staff for their roles in the revival.
