Ga West Assembly shuts down Amasaman China Mall over structural and safety defects

The Ga West Municipal Assembly has ordered the immediate closure of the Amasaman China Mall following a structural failure that left a customer and some workers injured.

In a statement issued and signed by the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive, John Desmond Sowah Nai, the decision follows an incident at about 6:00pm on Sunday, December 28, 2025, when a section of the mall’s first floor reportedly caved in due to excessive loading.

The collapse resulted in fracture injuries to a customer and some workers, raising serious public safety concerns.

In response, a joint inspection was conducted by members of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) together with relevant technical officers of the Assembly. According to the Assembly, the inspection established that the mall’s security, safety measures and structural integrity had been severely compromised, posing imminent danger to patrons, workers and the general public.

Consequently, the Municipal Assembly directed management of the facility to close down the Amasaman China Mall with immediate effect.

The closure will remain in force until specific safety and regulatory conditions are fully met.

These include a comprehensive structural integrity assessment by a certified structural engineer, the correction of all identified structural defects, safety lapses and overloading issues, as well as re-inspection and certification by the Physical Planning, Works, Environmental Health departments and the Ghana National Fire Service.

Written safety clearance and authorization must also be issued by the Assembly before the facility can be reopened.

The Assembly has further directed management of the mall to fully cooperate with all regulatory agencies during the closure period, warning that any attempt to operate the facility contrary to the directive will attract sanctions under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and other applicable laws.

The statement urged management to treat the matter with the utmost urgency in the interest of public safety.
