The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has announced plans to make it illegal for children in the Ga State to engage in fishing at the expense of schooling.

Speaking at the 2026 Kinka Blonya, the annual New Year children’s celebration, on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the King warned that parents who allow or involve their children in fishing once the by-law is passed will face arrest and prosecution.

He explained that the measure is part of broader efforts to safeguard the future of Ga children by improving access to quality education.

“All the traditional authorities in the Ga State have united to actively promote education. Soon, fishing by children at the expense of schooling will be criminalised,” he said.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II also highlighted ongoing initiatives, including the provision of scholarships to about a thousand schoolchildren, aimed at promoting socio-economic development through education in the Ga community.

“We have reached a point where prioritising education in the Ga State is non-negotiable. With over 1,000 scholarships available, parents have no excuse not to enrol their children in school. Let us work together to raise Ga children for a brighter future,” he added.
