The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has responded to a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows some of its personnel assaulting a civilian, reported to be a journalist.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, the Service said it has taken note of the footage but clarified that the identities of both the personnel involved and the alleged victim have not yet been officially established.

GNFS confirmed that the alleged assault is currently under police investigation and assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

According to the Service, the video reportedly captures an altercation between firefighters and a suspected thief who had earlier attacked fire service personnel at a fire scene with the assistance of accomplices. GNFS noted that this context forms part of the ongoing investigations.

Management of the Service has also constituted an internal committee to independently investigate the incident and determine the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

While condemning attacks on its personnel in the line of duty, GNFS emphasized that it does not condone any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by its officers, regardless of the circumstances.

The Service urged the public to remain calm and exercise restraint as investigations continue.
The statement reaffirmed GNFS’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency, adding that it will continue to cooperate with the media and relevant authorities to ensure accurate public information.

GNFS assured the public that further updates on the matter will be communicated as and when necessary.
