Pressure group Arise Ghana has strongly rejected calls for a third term in office for President John Dramani Mahama, describing such agitations as unconstitutional, dangerous and a threat to Ghana’s democratic stability.

The group made its position known at a press conference held on Wednesday, January 7, at the Accra International Press Centre, as part of its independent assessment of the Mahama government’s first year in office.

Addressing the media, Co-Convener of Arise Ghana, Marion Gifty Nyaaba, cautioned that any attempt to promote or normalise discussions around a third term presidency undermines the 1992 Constitution and weakens Ghana’s democratic foundations.

“Let us be clear: whispers of third-term extensions are unconstitutional, unwarranted and perilous. They erode democratic norms and invite instability,” she said, stressing that Ghanaians must reject such ideas unequivocally.

Ms Nyaaba emphasised that Ghana’s democracy thrives on strong institutions rather than the perpetuation of political leadership, warning against personalising power.

“Ghana needs institutional strength, not perpetual leaders,” she stated, adding that President Mahama should focus on effective governance within his constitutionally mandated tenure.

She further urged the President to respect the constitutional term limits and leave office at the appropriate time, noting that doing so would secure his place in history.

“President Mahama should lead effectively and exit gracefully, securing his legacy,” she added.
