Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner delivered Senegal a second Africa Cup of Nations title, sealing victory in a dramatic final marked by controversy and chaotic scenes at the end of regulation time.

Normal time ended amid confusion after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty following a VAR review, triggering angry reactions on the touchline and unrest in the stands. Senegal supporters clashed with security as they attempted to invade the pitch, forcing a lengthy delay.

When play eventually resumed, Brahim Diaz stepped up with the chance to end Morocco’s 50-year wait for continental glory. Under immense pressure and with virtually the last kick of the game, the Real Madrid midfielder opted to chip his effort down the middle, but the gamble failed as Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy stood firm to gather the ball comfortably.

The match itself offered few clear-cut chances across 90 minutes, with the late disorder casting a shadow over the occasion—particularly as Morocco had billed the tournament as a test event ahead of their bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Senegal made their breakthrough four minutes into extra time through Gueye, sparking a more open contest. Morocco pushed for an equaliser and came closest when Nayef Aguerd’s powerful header from a corner crashed against the crossbar.

As heavy rain fell in Rabat, Morocco’s hopes of a first Afcon crown since 1976 were extinguished, while Senegal celebrated another historic triumph on the continental stage.
