Members of the pressure group Arise Ghana on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, mounted a demonstration at the United States Embassy in Accra, calling for the immediate return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to answer allegations against him.

The protesters appealed to U.S. authorities to work with Ghanaian state institutions to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s repatriation, maintaining that the principle of accountability should apply equally to all public office holders.

Arise Ghana said the action formed part of efforts to prevent what it described as an attempt by the former minister to evade justice.

The group argued that Mr. Ofori-Atta must be made to respond to issues arising from his tenure in office.

During the protest, demonstrators held placards with inscriptions including “Bring Ken Back,” “Let Ofori-Atta Face Justice,” and “Ken Is Needed in Ghana,” while others wore branded T-shirts bearing similar messages.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, Bernard Monah, a member of Arise Ghana and a leading figure of the People’s National Convention (PNC), indicated that the group would sustain the protest until tangible steps are taken to secure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return.

He alleged that the former finance minister travelled to the United States on medical grounds but has since recovered and remained in the country beyond the permitted period.

Mr. Monah further claimed that Mr. Ofori-Atta sought permanent residency in the U.S. after learning of attempts to have him arrested in Ghana.

According to him, the group initially planned an indefinite protest but agreed with the police to demonstrate from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, beginning Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ofori-Atta is expected to appear before a U.S. court later on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in connection with alleged immigration-related offences.
