Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has reportedly passed away, sending shockwaves through the country’s gospel music fraternity.

Although official details surrounding his death are yet to be fully disclosed, information emerging on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, indicates that the celebrated musician died at the Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical care.

The news comes barely a month after the death of Adwoa Tiwaa, a prominent backing vocalist and member of the Asomafo music group, who passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Yaw Sarpong enjoyed a distinguished music career spanning more than four decades and is credited with shaping Ghana’s contemporary gospel sound.

Together with the Asomafo group, he produced timeless songs such as “Wo Haw Ne Sen,” “Owo No Ahen,” “Awurade Yesu,” and “Wopɛ Awurade Asem,” songs that continue to minister to believers across generations.

In March 2024, concerns were raised about his health after reports emerged that he was unwell, prompting an outpouring of support from fans and well-wishers across the country.

Several prominent Ghanaians, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia, publicly extended support to the gospel icon during his period of ill health.

Despite his immense influence and contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong previously revealed that his career had not been financially rewarding as many assumed. He disclosed that none of the producers of his 27 albums had paid him royalties for his work.

Renowned for his inspirational compositions, Yaw Sarpong’s music remains deeply rooted in the hearts of many believers and continues to inspire generations of gospel music lovers across Ghana.
