The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has cautioned mining companies across the country to strictly adhere to environmental protection measures or face sanctions.

The Vice Chairperson of the committee, John Darko, issued the warning during a working visit to Newmont Ahafo South Mines in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region. He said the committee will embark on nationwide visits to all mining companies to assess whether they are complying with laid-down regulations to safeguard the environment and protect host communities.

According to Mr Darko, the committee is determined to crack down on any company that flouts environmental standards.

“We will visit all mining companies in the country to ascertain whether they are doing the right things to protect the environment and safeguard the people,” he told the media.

After touring the Newmont Ahafo South Mines, Mr Darko said the committee was impressed with the company’s environmental management practices, particularly the steps taken to reclaim lands used for mining operations.

Meanwhile, the Process Manager of Newmont Ahafo South Mines, Samuel Bonney Noi, welcomed the committee’s visit and described it as timely.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Mr Noi said the engagement had helped set the record straight, especially in response to what he described as false accusations by sections of the public that the company was not doing enough to protect the environment.

He reaffirmed Newmont’s commitment to operating responsibly and in line with all environmental regulations.
