DVLA aligns driver’s licence expiry with date of birth, introduces SMS renewal alerts

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a major reform to Ghana’s driver licensing system, with all driver’s licences now set to expire on the holder’s date of birth.

The Chief Executive of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, disclosed the new policy as part of broader efforts to modernise the Authority’s operations and improve compliance among motorists.

Under the new arrangement, linking licence expiration to a driver’s birthday is expected to make it easier for motorists to remember their renewal dates, reducing instances of expired licences and the associated penalties.

In addition, the DVLA is rolling out an SMS notification system to remind motorists ahead of both driver’s licence and roadworthiness certificate renewals. The digital alert system is intended to enhance convenience, minimise delays, and promote greater adherence to regulatory requirements.

Mr. Kotey noted that the reforms form part of a wider digital transformation agenda aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening road safety, and ensuring a more efficient regulatory environment for road users.

DVLA says further initiatives are in the pipeline to streamline processes, reduce turnaround times, and make interactions with the Authority more user-friendly as it continues to modernise its operations.
