The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has drawn lessons from its defeat in the 2024 general elections and is ready to rebuild public trust through a more responsible and united opposition.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday January 26 2026, Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the party was not flawless while in government and accepted collective responsibility for mistakes made during its tenure.

He noted that the party’s role in opposition now goes beyond criticism, stressing that the NPP remains committed to providing leadership in Parliament as the Minority, even as it concludes its internal processes.

“Our responsibility now is deeper,” he said, assuring Ghanaians that the Minority in Parliament will continue to lead the charge in holding government accountable.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further disclosed that the party’s immediate focus is the completion of its flagbearer race scheduled for January 31, 2026. According to him, once that process is concluded, the NPP will rally behind its chosen leader to articulate a clear vision aimed at winning back the confidence of the electorate.

He emphasized the need for unity within the party, stating that the goal is to present a responsive, responsible, and united opposition capable of offering credible alternatives to the government.

“We have done it before,” he added, expressing confidence that the party can once again regain the mandate of the Ghanaian people.

The remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the NPP to reorganize and reposition itself following its transition from government to opposition.
