The Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region has launched the government’s flagship poultry initiative, Nkoko Nketenkete, aimed at improving household nutrition, enhancing livelihoods, and promoting a community-based farming system.

Speaking at the launch, the District Chief Executive for Sekyere East, Ibrahim Adams, said the initiative had long been a vision of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), dating back to its time in opposition.

He explained that the programme is designed to significantly reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported chicken, which currently costs Ghana between 350 million and 400 million dollars annually.

According to Mr. Adams, the high cost of poultry imports has been a major contributor to the instability of the cedi against the dollar, stressing that the government is committed to reversing this trend through the implementation of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative.

He encouraged residents of the district to take full advantage of the programme to boost local poultry production and improve their incomes.

He further advised beneficiaries who register under the initiative to take proper care of the chicks provided to them to ensure healthy growth and maximise profits.

Mr. Adams expressed optimism that the initiative would not only strengthen the local economy but also contribute to national food security and job creation.
