Walewale MP condemns alleged military assault on journalist, civilians

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has condemned what he describes as an unprovoked assault by military personnel on a journalist and several civilians in the Walewale Township.

In a statement dated Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the MP alleged that soldiers traveling in an armoured vehicle and a military truck from Bolgatanga towards Tamale stopped in Walewale around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, and assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General, along with scores of innocent civilians.

According to Dr. Abdul-Kabiru, the soldiers also destroyed properties, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles belonging to residents, leaving the town in a state of fear and apprehension.

He further alleged that the journalist was detained for more than four hours after the assault, and that video evidence of injuries he had recorded on his phone was deleted by the soldiers.

The Walewale MP stated that checks with both the District Police Command and the military officers stationed in Walewale indicate that neither institution was informed nor involved in the operation carried out by the soldiers.

Dr. Abdul-Kabiru noted that the incident is not an isolated one, recalling a similar assault in February 2025 in which the same journalist, two other journalists, and several civilians were allegedly attacked.

He said some of those incidents left victims maimed, with no compensation paid.

Describing the situation as troubling, the MP accused sections of the military of turning Walewale and its environs into what he termed a “jungle,” where unprofessional acts are allegedly meted out to civilians with impunity.

He dismissed claims that recent military actions were linked to bus attacks, describing such justifications as a ruse.

According to him, no bus attacks have occurred in the area for some time, and despite dissatisfaction over the government’s handling of the Bawku conflict and the lack of military escorts for travelers, residents have remained calm and law-abiding.

The MP warned that continued military brutality, if unchecked, could lead to military-civilian confrontation with serious consequences.

Dr. Abdul-Kabiru has therefore called on the Acting Minister of Defence to institute an immediate investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He stressed that the “wholesale abuse of civilians and the indiscriminate application of force” is unacceptable and must be halted.
