National Ambulance Service moves to establish station at Takoradi Airport

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has initiated plans to establish a dedicated ambulance station at the Takoradi Airport as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical response and improve public safety in the Western Region.

In furtherance of this initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of NAS, Dr. George Kojo Owusu together with key management officials and regional leadership from the Western Region, recently held discussions with the Takoradi Airport Base Commander and his team to assess the feasibility of the project.

The meeting focused on the provision of appropriate office and operational space to enable a fully functional 24-hour ambulance service at the airport.

The proposed station is expected to align with government’s 24-hour economic agenda, ensuring round-the-clock emergency medical readiness.

According to NAS, establishing an ambulance station at the airport will significantly enhance rapid response to aviation-related emergencies, including aircraft incidents and medical crises involving passengers or crew.

The presence of an on-site ambulance team is also expected to improve passenger and staff safety, allowing for swift medical intervention in cases such as cardiac emergencies, injuries, or sudden illnesses.

Beyond the airport enclave, the facility will serve as a strategic support base for surrounding communities, particularly peri-urban areas that often experience longer emergency response times.

It will also facilitate efficient medical evacuations, enabling seamless coordination between ground ambulance services and air medical transport for critically ill or injured patients.

The initiative is further expected to strengthen the Western Region’s emergency preparedness, especially given Takoradi’s strategic importance as a hub for the oil and gas industry, and to enhance coordination of emergency resources across the region.

NAS says a clear implementation roadmap, including defined timelines, will be developed to ensure the timely establishment of the ambulance station.
