The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has upheld Mohammed Baba Jamal as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, despite allegations of vote buying that emerged during the party’s parliamentary primary on Saturday, February 7.

This decision is contained in a report submitted by a three-member committee established by the party to investigate claims of inducement during the primary.

Sources within the party have confirmed that Baba Jamal will lead the NDC into the by-election and is expected to file his nomination with the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, February 11.

The committee was formed amid widespread concerns and reports that items such as television sets and cash were allegedly distributed to delegates during the primary, sparking questions about the credibility of the process and reviving debate over vote buying in internal party elections.

According to party insiders, the committee reviewed petitions from delegates and party members, examined available evidence, and engaged key stakeholders before arriving at its conclusions.

While acknowledging broader concerns about the monetisation of internal elections, the committee reportedly found no basis to disqualify Baba Jamal as the party’s candidate for the upcoming contest.

Baba Jamal, who won the primary, has consistently denied the allegations, insisting that his campaign strictly adhered to party rules and guidelines.

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, making the by-election necessary.

The NDC is expected to formally communicate the committee’s findings as it steps up preparations and intensifies campaigning ahead of the polls.
