The Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has called for the inclusion of affordable food services within large corporate and institutional premises to support workers.

In a statement presented before Parliament, the she noted that there is a growing need for reasonably priced food services in large establishments such as hospitals, banks, ministries and other major private-sector institutions.

She explained that many workers struggle to find affordable meals during working hours, a situation that often compels them to rely on food vendors operating outside official spaces.

According to the Klottey-Korle MP, deliberately incorporating food services into the design of institutions and ensuring the meals are reasonably priced would ease pressure on both workers and informal vendors.

She added that such an approach would help reduce the tendency for vendors and workers to occupy unauthorized spaces around institutional premises.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings therefore proposed that relevant regulatory authorities, including the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and various Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies, develop guidelines to encourage large institutions and public facilities to include affordable cafeterias or food courts in their premises.

She suggested that the requirement could form part of planning approval processes for major developments to ensure workers have access to convenient and affordable meals.
