A/R: 12 dead, two injured in fatal Akumadan crash

Twelve persons have died while two others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash at Akumadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

In a statement released by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Thursday, May 28, firefighters from the Techiman Municipal Fire Station responded to the accident scene on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after receiving a distress call at 1:57 p.m.

The statement said the head-on collision involved a Nissan Caravan with registration number BA-2913-14 and a Shacman trailer with registration number GT-9771-25.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the trailer was travelling from Techiman towards Kumasi, while the Nissan Caravan was travelling from Kumasi towards Techiman when the crash occurred.

The GNFS disclosed that 14 persons were onboard the Nissan Caravan, while two persons were travelling in the trailer. The occupants of the trailer escaped unhurt.

The Service said the Nissan Caravan was completely destroyed in the crash, while the trailer sustained partial damage to its head.

Ten persons, made up of four females and six males, including a boy, died instantly at the scene.

Four injured victims were rushed to the Nkenkansu Government Hospital for treatment. However, two female victims later died, bringing the death toll to 12.

One male victim in critical condition was later transferred to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital for further treatment, while another male victim remains on admission at the Nkenkansu Government Hospital.

The deceased were handed over to the Police and conveyed to the Nkenkansu Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigations.

The rescue team, led by Station Officer Two (STNO II) Osei Theophilus, also salvaged personal belongings, parcels and the battery of the Nissan Caravan from the accident scene.

The GNFS said investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
