Former Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, may soon emerge as the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagbearer for the next general election if he is successful in the party’s primaries next year.
The experienced politician and former diplomat said he is ready to lead the party to reclaim power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 Presidential election.
“In 2006 I presented myself as a potential candidate for NDC, in 2016 we go to an election and we lose; 2017…by God’s grace I am alive, I am well, I am a healthy man, I am happy, I have my potentials, I have my capacities, why would any right-thinking person think that I could not or should not be a candidate for the leadership of the party?
“I will be an action-oriented President,” Spio-Garbrah told Joy News’ Gifty Andoh Appiah.
He is hopeful he will beat other potential candidates, which includes former President John Mahama.
Spio-Garbrah is among the respected public servants in Africa, an authority on mass communications, and has held several high-profile positions in the field.
He is a former Minister of Communication in Ghana, one-time Ambassador of Ghana to the United States and Mexico, Minister of Education, Minister responsible for Mines and Energy and a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board in Paris.
He served on former President John Rawlings’ cabinet between 1994 and 2000.
Spio-Garbrah is a member of the board of directors of South Africa Telekom, AngloGold Ashanti and recently of Vodacom.
He was a member of the International Advisory Board of the African Press Organization (APO).
Ekwow Spio-Garbrah’s career reflects more than 40 years of top leadership and senior management experience focussing on International Communications and Knowledge Management within the spheres of International Organisations, Government, Banking and Finance, Non-Governmental Organisations, and Private Business and Enterprise with a focus on Africa.
