Ghana Armwrestling Federation calls on Accra Mayor The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has called on the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra Metropolis, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah at his office in Accra.
The visit was to officially introduce the sport of armwrestling to him and also to formally let him know of Ghana’s hosting of the 2018 Africa Armwrestling Championship in July. President of the federation, Charles Osei Assibey thanked the Mayor for granting them audience and urged him to adopt the sport as one of his own as he has been doing with other disciplines.
He also pleaded with the Accra Mayor to be the father of the sport and called on him for assistance for the upcoming Championship. At the meeting, it was revealed that two of Ghana’s African championships hailed from the Mayor’s constituency, Odododiodio.
On his part, the Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, thanked the executives of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for the recognition of his desire to support sports development in the Assembly.
He said his love for sports was mainly due to the health benefits and also to use it as a medium to brand the city as well as attract tourists. He pledged his personal support and that of his office to the promotion and development of the sport and also assist with the federation’s hosting of the championship.
He also agreed to form an armwrestling club at his constituency so as to engage the youth in the sport and also get a representative in the national team for the Africa Championship. Hon. Sowah again noted that the championship will serve as a platform for the AMA to showcase the rich culture of Accra and also make known the various tourist sites in the capital.
The federation heads assisted by members of the national armwrestling team, Golden Arms, presented a medal to the mayor as a sign of recognition to his love for sports. Present at the meeting were; Mr Kofi Addo Agyekum, Mikki Osei Berko, Biney, Mavis Amanor and the Chief Operations Officer (COO) for Accra 2018, William Ezah.
