The Minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development Alhaji Abu-bakar Saddique Boniface has inaugurated the newly created Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region to bring governance closer to the people.
The inauguration of the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly forms part of the numerous district assemblies and municipalities created by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development across the regions as part of the exercise of devolution of power in the country.
The regional breakdown are  Greater Accra ten with one declared a municipality, Eastern six with one declared a municipality , Central  region two, Ashanti 13 with four declared a municipality, Brong Ahafo two with four declared a municipality and Western one with seven declared a municipality.
Others are Volta three, Upper East three, Upper West three  with declared a municipality, Northern two with six declared a municipality.
Speaking at the inauguration exercise in Accra, the Minister called on members of the Assembly to minimize agitation in the elections of District Chief Executives and Municipal Chief Executives as well as the appointment of Government appointees.
He reminded them to eschew participant politics in the choice of leaders for the newly created Assembly.
‘Look for persons who will lead you and champion the course of the municipality, elect people that will help the new municipality grow ‘he told members of the Assembly.
He said the main core function is to look for people who will fight for the course of the municipality and not their individualistic course.
According to him, the people are satisfied they have their own municipality and determined to assist in ensuring the successful execution of its functions for overall development of the area.
He said as provided in the Constitution, the functions of the municipality include formulation and execution of plans, programmes and strategies for the effective mobilization of the resources necessary for the overall development of the municipality.
‘’My government is offering a new approach to doing things to drive the agenda for change, growth, job creation and prosperity   for all.
The agenda will certainly be fulfilled if the government brings governance to the doorsteps of the people adding that this will ensure effective and efficient decentralization through grassroots participation, better planning and improved service delivery in local communities’’ he explained.
He said the Assemblies are focal areas for the government’s rural and urban development agenda including the provision of better opportunities for poverty reduction, enhancement of quality of life and agricultural industrialization as well as urban renewal programmes with emphasis on development.
The Chairman of the occasion Alhaji Mohammed Nii Futa, a former Member of Parliament for the area said it has become necessary as part of government policy of devolution of power at the local government level hence the creation of the new Assemblies.
He urged the Assembly members to make adjustments that will make administration of the new Assembly feasible.
According to him, Accra as a whole has grown from a council to metropolitan so devolution of power is necessary to bring governance to the people.
He reminded them that in view of this it is necessary for all to participate in the development of the Assembly after its inauguration.
