IGP orders investigation into the death of engineer

The Inspector General of Police [IGP], David Asante Apeatu, has tasked the Police Professional and Standards Bureau (PIPS), probe into the death of 34-year old Prince Kobina Kumi, an aeronautic engineer with the African World Airlines.
The directive follows a petition sent to the IGP by family members of the deceased.
The family of the deceased accused the Akyem Akroso Police in the Eastern Region of killing the deceased after they seized his car over suspected drunk-driving.
He was found dead between Akroso and Asuboa with bullet wounds.
Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said the outcome of ongoing investigations by both national and regional commands will be made public to ensure the culprits are punished for the crime.
“The family has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police so since that has been done, the Police Intelligence and Professional and Standards Bureau will take up the matter. Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Command has also instituted an enquiry into the whole matter to investigate the conduct of our men as to whether they followed standard procedure,” he said.
The family had also claimed that police prevented the deceased from taking any other vehicle after his car was seized.
But the police service’s account appears to dispute this allegation.
ASP Tetteh said the man is believed to have boarded a commercial vehicle, adding that the police will be looking for the driver of the said vehicle to assist with investigations.
“We have also commenced investigations into the death of the young man. The driver of the commercial vehicle will be a material witness and he will be able to tell us whether the man was able to get to his final destination or he alighted along the way because it looks as if he was murdered and the body was dumped in the bush. So we are looking for the driver of the vehicle,” he concluded.
