The Africa Armwrestling Federation (AAF, has appointed the President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), Charles Osei Asibey onto its Governing Board.
The appointment comes months after Mr Osei Asibey officially assumed the leadership of the sport in Ghana.
He thus becomes the first Ghanaian to serve at the apex of the Armwrestling sport on the continent, after leading the country to join the Morroco-based Federation, becoming the 9th country to officially have an association for the discipline.
A renowned Journalist and Sports Commentator, Charles Osei Asibey, is expected to influence decisions at the continental body with his decades of experience in sports administration.
The Ghana Armwrestling Federation was formed early this year after an idea originally mooted by Mr Osei Asibey, himself an Executive Committee Member of both the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) and the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).
The Federation was inaugurated by the National Sports Authority (NSC) and issued with licence as a legally recognised and constituted federation in September.
A former General Manager of Happy FM and a Morning Show Host for over a decade and half, Mr Osei Asibey comes to his new role with 22 years’ experience in the media and sports administration and is expected to help promote and grow the sport on the continent.
He has travelled extensively and is believed to be highly connected, both home and abroad.
The Federation has also been granted membership of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).
Armwrestling involves two participants, each places one arm on a surface with their elbows bent and touching the surface, and they grip each other’s hand. The goal is to pin the other’s arm onto the surface, with the winner’s arm over the loser’s arm. It is a traditional recreation in most African communities but interest in it as a professional sport started early this year when the Ghana Armwrestling Federation was formed to spearhead the promotion of the game.
“ I am humbled by this development and I hope to give off my best to Armwrestling in Africa”, an elated Mr Osei Asibey told Journalists.
