NPP has no power to disband vigilante – NPP Communications Director

Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, has said that the NPP as a Party has no power to disband vigilante groups in the Party.

Speaking in an interview Mr. Buabeng Asamoah said, “NPP has no power to disband vigilante groups because we didn’t form those groups I will rather urge the NCCE to educate these groups in their own way and not asks us to disband them because we don’t have that power.”

He however described calls by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for the party to disband vigilante groups as completely out of place.

The NCCE on Monday 8th October at a press briefing called on all political parties to show their commitment to national stability by disbanding all vigilante groups.

Condemning act vigilantes in the country, chairman of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah said political party vigilantes have no place in Ghana’s democratic culture and therefore the leadership of the NPP must show their commitment to national stability by disbanding all vigilante groups associated with them.

The call comes on the back of a recent attack by some members of NPP pro-vigilante group, Delta Force on Tafo Pankrono MP, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei, while he was holding a meeting with some constituency executives.

But Mr Buabeng Asamoah said vigilante groups such as Delta Force and others associated with his party are associations just as any other association in the country.

He indicated that the groups came about to help with crowd control whenever the party was out there doing rallies and holding a congress.

He, however, condemned the acts of the Delta Force, saying they should use the appropriate channels to resolve their issues and not attack their leaders.
