GHAMRO members must allow system to work – Kojo Antwi

Highlife musician and former chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), Kojo Antwi, has advised members of the organisation to allow its structure to work effectively devoid of any interference.

The Music maestro in an interview with Doctar Cann on Happy FM’s Showbiz Xtra, asserted that the music industry players must be educated in order to change the perception that GHAMRO executives spend monies belonging to members.

Antwi’s administration was accused of failing to account for royalties collected on behalf of the members. The United Concerned Members of GHAMRO (UNICOM), led by highlife legend Randy Nunoo and others were among those who made the allegation.

Speaking on Happy FM, the ‘Akuaba’ hitmaker stated, “Members of GHAMRO must allow the system to work. WE have this established perception that the GHAMRO people [executives] are chopping our money, I think members must be educated on how the system works for them to change that perception.”

He added that, we are in a era where music is consumed digitally. “Music is consumed digitally nowadays. So under my tenure as the chairman, my target was to place ourselves ahead of the game digitally so that royalties collection will be easy.”

GHAMRO was established under section 49 of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005 and regulated under L.I. 1962 of 2010 to collect and distribute royalties accruing to authors and owners of copyright and neighbouring rights.
