Greater Accra Operations Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Supt. Kwesi Ofori’s attempt to defend the conduct of the police personnel who allegedly brutalized some residents of Adentan in the Greater Accra Region last Thursday, has failed to glide.

Speaking on JoyNew Channel, Mr. Kwesi Ofori said the police officers dispatched to maintain law and order resorted to firing of teargas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the rioters, but not live ammunitions.

He contradicted himself when he tried to justify that the Police did no wrong in using force to disperse the crowd. Saying, “If you use hard hands don’t expect the police to come with empty hands.” The Police had said that the protestors pelted them with stones which compelled them to apply some force.

Meanwhile, the residents of the area have insisted that the Police aside the rubber bullets also fired live bullets, which hit a woman and her 14 year old son. The teenager, media reports confirmed, was taken to the Nyaho Medical Centre where the bullet was removed.

The residents have also accused the police of needlessly assaulting most of them in process as videos on circulation exposed the police chasing the protestors and beating them up..

The residents of Madina and Adentan staged a massive protest against the Government over its inability to complete footbridges on the N4 highway after a speeding taxi knocked and killed a student of the West African Senior High School.

The residents account on the death toll stands 194 in 2018 alone, but the police say the number is 24.

The death of the young girl infuriated the residents who mounted roadblocks and burnt lorry tyres in demand for the completion of the six footbridges on the N4 highway.
