I’m going through difficult times – Nana Yaa

Sensational songstress and daughter of highlife legend Pat Thomas, Nana Yaa has revealed how very nasty things were said about her look.

Speaking to DJ Advicer on Happy FM’s ‘Ayekoo’ after drive show, she was asked about one thing someone has said about that has deeply hurt her.

“It’s mainly to do with my brand and then also some people say I am outdated because I took a break for a long time for business, so some people don’t want to give me a chance, but the main one has been my image and brand. The fact that I portray Africanism with my cowries, beads and Kente. The main one has been the cowries, I don’t understand the negativity about it because It’s our own culture, it’s for us,” she said.

“Is it because I’m the only artiste bringing it up front and using it in some people’s faces because I use it for everything, my clothes, accessories, my hair and I do it over the top. This is because I believe as an artiste, you have to look different, and you have to stand out from the other artistes, that’s what makes you. You have to be different, you can’t look like everybody else, sound like everybody else, dress like everybody else, you have to have your own image, and your own style of dressing and this is mine and it’s like the negativity about it is crazy but I didn’t mind them,” she added.

She recounted an instance where a lady left some very horrible comments under a photo of hers posted on social media.

“She doesn’t look attractive and the cowries are too many. Somebody went to the extent of saying, I look like someone who as been used for ritual sacrifice meanwhile when you see the gorgeous pictures this comment was made about, you would love it.”

“I was invited to one of the glitz events at the state house and I was with my husband, even though I had lost a little weight and was looking a little boney, I looked nice and decent with my nice African style,” she revealed.

The ‘My honey’ hitmaker is not shaken, she is rather motivated with the fact that her style of dressing has influenced some female Ghanaian musicians and she is widely identified when any research on cowries are done on the internet.

“That’s not going to bring me down or kill me; I don’t care what you say.”

“Some of the female artistes are rocking cowries thanks to me, I didn’t create cowries but I brought it out. In Ghana I’m the only female who made cowries trend. My picture pops up on google when you type cowries,” she disclosed.

Nana Yaa released her latest single titled ‘Ohemaa’ with it’s video on November 12, 2018.
