Black Maidens coach Evans Adotey has expatiated the reason behind the late substitution of goalkeeper Grace Boadu during the team’s defeat to Mexico in the 2018 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in Uruguay last Sunday.

Black Maidens captain Mukarama Abdullai handed them a deserved lead a minute after recess before Nicole Perez equalised from the spot for Mexico on the hour mark.

But the Maidens came a whisker of sealing a memorable semifinal berth after substitute forward Susan Teye restored Ghana’s lead on 75th minute, only for goalkeeping howler from Boadu late in the game helped Perez to score her second goal of the day, which dragged the encounter into penalty shootouts.

Ghana eventually lost the match in the shootout after Justice Tweneboah and Elizabeth Oppong missed their kicks.

Before the shootout, coach Adotey replaced goalkeeper Boadu with Cynthia Findiib to the dismay of several advocates of the team.

In expounding on the substitution during an interview with Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Happy FM‘s Wamputu Sports, coach Adotey said, “We knew Grace as our first choice goalkeeper but she wasn’t herself that very day and together with my technical team, we all shared an idea for Cynthia to come on because she’s very good at saving penalties.”

“We delayed in bringing Cynthia on because we were waiting for the 3rd goal but she was already preparing to come on that is why she came on in the injury time.”
