Ghana International School’s Rohan Karamechandani has scooped gold in the 2016 Junior Chess Championship organized by the Mentors Chess Academy which had over 80 students participating.
Karamechandani shrugged off tough competition from Alpha Beta’s Adotey Addo who placed second and Noren Varyani of Ghana International School (GIS) who came third in the Under-17 category.
In the Under-14 category, Sovereign Joseph, a student of  Alpha Beta snatched gold while Al Rayan International School’s Brar Shiv came second as Daddey-Adjei Nkunim of Alpha Beta took third place.
Rohan Sharma of GIS won gold at the U-11 category while Nana Kwame Boachie of International Community School came second while Robin Hammerslag of the German-Swiss International School placed third.
The 5-round Swiss competition which came off at the Ghana International School, saw participants being drawn from schools such as International Community School, Queens International School, German-Swiss International, Soul Clinic International School, God’s Home, Great Stars School, St. Charbel International School, Morning Star, Mary Mother of Good Council School, Al Rayan International School, Roman Ridge School and Christ the King.
Speaking with Happy FM, Coordinator for the Junior Open Chess Challenge David Boamah Acheampong admonished parents to encourage their wards to play chess by getting at least one chess board at home due to the enormous benefits of the game and also called on corporate bodies to come and support this laudable initiative.
“We are impressed with the attendance and the competition as a whole. I urge parents to get at least one chess board at home because this is a game which improves the concentration, logical reasoning and thinking skills and memory of the individuals. I call on corporate bodies to come and partner us so we take this to a new level.” David Acheampong said.
