Custodians of the Dagbon tradition led by the Gushei Naa and Kugnaa have nominated the Chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Abubakar to succeed the late Ya Naa Yakubu Andani II who was killed in 2002.

The Yoo Naa Abubakar is the head of the Andani Royal family in Dagbon.

The nomination is in line with the customs and traditions with respect to  the succession to the kingship of Dagbon.

The decision of the Traditional Selection Committee is also in line with the Dagbon constitution of 1930 and the Supreme Court decision of December 1986.

The Supreme Court in 1986 ordered that only occupants of skins of Mion, Karaga and Savelugu are eligible to contest for the Kingship of Dagbon.

Dagbon has been engulfed in protracted chieftaincy dispute which had claimed several lives and destroyed properties since the death of Ya Naa Yakubu Andani II.

The Government of former President Kufuor constituted the Otumfuo Committee of Eminent Chiefs to employ customary mechanisms to resolve the problem.

The Committee finally managed to get the Abudu and Andani royal families to commit to a roadmap to peace in Dagbon.

This led to the performance of the funeral rites of the two late Ya Naas: Naa Mahamadu Abdulai and Naa Yakubu Andani.

The coronation of the new Ya-Naa is expected to begin as soon as possible.

Yoo Naa Abubakar had contested this position with three other persons: the Tampion-Naa; the Regent of Dagbon Kampakuya-Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani, and the Bolin-Lana Abdulai Mahamadu.

Per the customs of Dagbon, the selected candidate must be taken to the Katini Palace (Graveyard of late Overlords) to undergo some form of spiritual activities to mark a successful coronation.

This will be followed by moving him to the Gbewa Palace.

Information gather by TV3 indicates that the staff of authority to officially communicate a successor which is a bunch of grass has been handed over to the Yoo-Naa.

Kingmakers led by the Regent of Gushegu are expected to visit his palace to match him to the seat of the Overlord to commence his traditional journey slated for later tonight which will be led by the Kug-Naa.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior has on Friday January 18,2019 imposed a 17:00 to 07:00 curfew on Yendi and its environs as measures to protect lives and property in the wake of the announcement.
