The train service between Accra and Tema is back after nearly two years of suspension.

The service, which was to have started two weeks ago, was postponed due to activities of encroachers along the railway lines.

The actual reconstruction of the 24 kilometre Accra-Tema railway line began in 2004 to help reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

For the first ride on Tuesday, the train left Accra to Tema and back with the Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey; Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah and Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, on board.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Railway Company Limited, John Essel, says it is working hard to put other routes back on track.

AMA Chief Executive, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, explained that the reintroduction of the railway services will drastically reduce traffic congestion in the capital.
