Man sues 37 Hospital over amputated leg

A 37-year-old man has sued six medical doctors at the 37 Military Hospital and three others for alleged negligence in medical care, leading to loss of part of his right leg.

The plaintiff, Mr Wisdom Tettey Narh, a technician pharmacist, is claiming GH¢2.5 million “for the loss of the limp due to the negligence’’ against the doctors, the 37 Military Hospital, the Ghana Health Service and the  Attorney-General.He is also seeking special damages for the negligence, legal fees and cost.
Accident
In his writ filed at the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court, Mr Narh claimed that he was involved in a road accident on February 1, 2016 in which he sustained injuries and as a result he was referred by the Tema General Hospital to the 37 Military Hospital.
He said he arrived at the 37 Military Hospital around mid-day, but he did not receive immediate medical attention, except x-rays, and “this resulted in serious infections and complications of his injuries”.
Mr Narh further claimed that he received his first medication on “February 4, 2016, three clear days after his referral’’.
According to him, the prescription did not work and he was put on new antibiotics.
“It turned out that the prescription he was put on could not fight the infections that the injuries had developed and his injuries deteriorated and began to spread, worsening the condition of his health,’’ he claimed.
Discharge me
The plaintiff averred that based on his condition, he wrote to the management of the hospital to discharge him to enable him to seek treatment at another medical facility.
“When management received the letter, they came and apologised for the oversight and promised that I would henceforth be given the best of attention should I remain at the 37 Military Hospital,’’ he said.
He added that he did not trust the management and so he decided to leave, but while he was waiting he decided to conduct a laboratory test on his own initiative.
“The results showed that the infection had reached an advanced stage making it incurable and the only option was to cut off the infested limp to prevent the spread of the infection,’’ he said.
