AFCON 2019 Qualifier: Ghana set to be rewarded SIX points from cancelled double-header against Sierra Leone

The Black Stars of Ghana have qualified for their 22nd Africa Cup of Nations tournament following a 1-0 win over Kenya in the final match of the qualifiers on Saturday in Accra.

Ghana booked their place in the continental championship in November last year following the omission of Sierra Leone from the qualifiers after a ban from FIFA due to government interference.

But Kwesi Appiah’s side had to beat the Harambee Stars of Kenya to ensure they finished atop of Group F when the two sides met at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Despite dominating the game, it took the Black Stars 83 minutes to break the East Africans through debutant Caleb Ekuban.

Ghana topped Group F with 9 points, two above Kenya after four round of matches.

This year’s qualification makes it 22 for the four-time champions, two adrift of seven-time winners Egypt.

Ghana have played 96 games, won 53, lost 25 and drawn 17. They have amassed 176 points which is the second highest number of points in the competition.

The West African giants joins former winners Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria at the finals.

The draw for the group-stage is scheduled to come in April.
