Fred Pappoe calls for dialogue session with players over bonuses

Former Vice President of the GFA, Fred Pappoe, has stated that negotiation with players ahead of a tournament is the solution to the problem of bonus issues faced by most African nations.

African nations have on several occasions been faced with the problem of dealing with payments of remunerations to players.

An example is what happened during the 2014 World Cup where Ghanaian and Cameroonian players boycotted training over unpaid bonuses.

Speaking at the 6th Association of International Sports Press (AIPS) congress at the Accra City Hotel, Fred Pappoe, advised handlers of the various national teams to negotiate ahead of time on remuneration to be paid to players.

“The process for negotiating for bonuses that are due players should be done in a timely manner. You don’t wait till one or two weeks to kickoff before you start talking about that. Also it doesn’t make sense because, if it is the government that is going to finance it, we have a whole lot of budgetary systems. It has to be approved by Ministry of Finance and go through Parliament, Central Bank and all that. You must start the process way way early,” he said.

The football administrator further added that the leadership of the players must not be excluded from the discussions on their bonuses.

“One sure way of making your work easier is to involve the leadership of the players,” he noted.
